Pakihi Seabirds Restoration Project

Biodiversity Project

Raukumara, Tairāwhiti

About this project

This project is another world first restoration attempt for the Tairāwhiti region. Pelagic shearwaters and petrels once covered East Cape as far inland as the Raukumara Range. This project is using acoustic attraction in an effort to encourage pelagic titi crossing East Cape to establish and breed. This has never been attempted previously in the world.

A pest fence has been built, pest control is in place, a sound system is currently operating each night. Funding is needed to continue good quality pest control and expand the nesting area.
