Tarere 2 Trust
Biodiversity Project
Kopuapounamu Valley, Te Araroa, Tairāwhiti
About this project
The Tarere 2 Māori Land Trust administers over 2,500 hectares of whenua located in the Kopuapounamu Valley near Te Araroa, which encompasses pastoral farmland, pine trees and native bush.
The Misssion
Tarere alone is 1100 ha of native forest and 700 ha of regenerative native forest (manuka scrub).
We plan on using manual extraction, we need to get "boots on the ground" cutting tracks for hands-on trapping projects, walking tracks for recreational ground hunters and professional pest eradications and recreational lovers of our natural native environment.
Setting up environmental science projects on our doorstep with our local schools. The more investment into our own, the more subscription the whole whānau will have in the Whenua Restoration. Especially "Tieki Taiao" and our own mātauranga (Māori) that can be added to or enhancement to modern conservation practices.
We are currently testing our local water ways using Stream Health Monitoring Assessment Kits (SHMAK) from Niwa for Level 1-3 Achievement Standards in Biology and Earth Science. Statistics level 2-3 with data from monitoring micro-invertebrates and waterway food chains. (oranga rauropi, oranga wai) and water clarity (He mā te wai).
